Accelerators

These chemicals are used to control the gelling and curing times of polyester and vinyl ester resins and derivatives. They are mostly composed of metal salts, some of them are various amines or have different structures. Their common point is that they promote free radical polymerisation by accelerating electron transfer.
The most widely used accelerator is cobalt octoate. They work in harmony with MEK-P (Methyl ethyl ketone peroxide) which gives the best combination in terms of performance, compatibility and price. Accelerators used to adjust the gelation time of the applied material should be used carefully according to the operating temperature. Working at low temperatures may require more accelerator than you need at room temperature. If the accelerator is not used with MEK-P at room temperature, the reaction may take days to finalise.
